Squirrels in the Loft
At iX5 Pest Control, we understand that squirrels can be an emotive subject. Many of us enjoy seeing these agile, curious creatures in our gardens or local parks. However, the perception can change dramatically once squirrels find their way into our homes—particularly the loft. When this happens, they can cause significant damage, stress, and financial burden.
Understanding the Risks
Squirrels are active all year round and are exceptionally resourceful when it comes to accessing roof spaces. Once inside, they often set up a dray (nest) and may begin raising their young. While the initial signs may be limited to the sound of scurrying in the loft, the true extent of the damage is often hidden until it’s too late.
We have seen properties suffer thousands of pounds worth of damage from squirrel infestations. These animals are persistent chewers and will gnaw through timber, including rafters and joists, as well as plastic pipework and electrical cables. Beyond structural damage, they can also ruin personal belongings and treasured keepsakes stored in the loft—items that may be irreplaceable.
How Do Squirrels Get In?
Squirrels are excellent climbers and remarkable jumpers, capable of leaping 8 to 10 feet from a nearby tree or building. They often exploit existing gaps, broken tiles, or arch-shaped tiles which make ideal entry points. If no suitable access is found, squirrels are more than capable of chewing through plastic cladding or timber to force their way in.
Unfortunately, once inside, they may not simply leave. Some may cause damage and then move on, while others will nest and establish a base—potentially leading to an ongoing problem if not addressed.
What You Can Do
If you suspect squirrel activity in your loft, it is crucial not to ignore it. This issue will not resolve itself. While it is not always possible to fully squirrel-proof a property, you can take steps to reduce the risk. Inspect the roofline and guttering for any holes, gaps, or loose tiles, and seal these where possible. Keep in mind that lofts require some ventilation for airflow, so complete sealing is neither practical nor recommended.
Legal Considerations and Our Approach
Many people are surprised to learn that it is illegal to release grey squirrels back into the wild. As a non-indigenous species, the law prohibits their release once captured. For this reason, pest controllers must use dispatch methods that are both humane and legal.
At iX5 Pest Control, we exclusively use instant dispatch traps for squirrels. While live capture traps are available, using them requires visits at least every 12 hours to comply with animal welfare laws. Leaving a squirrel in a trap without food or water would be inhumane and an offence, which is why we opt for instant, humane methods to ensure the process is as quick and stress-free as possible.
Don’t Delay – Take Action
If you’ve heard unexplained noises in the loft or noticed signs of squirrel activity, it’s important to act swiftly. The longer the issue goes unchecked, the greater the potential for costly and extensive damage.
